This jeep as such, is no longer with us. It had many years ago, before my time, been in some sort of accident that resulted in the chassis being bent. I had purchased it in 1980, completely in pieces and "restored" it over a two year period. It was definitely a composite, with a GPW engine with a number stamped "A57". I used a phillipino made body and had to remake the front chassis horns. The bends and twists in the chassis rails, did not appear to bad at the time and I managed to get everything to fit on re-assembly. After 8 years of some hard 4X4 trips and long distance touring trips such as the Tip of Cape York here in Australia and out west to the Birdsville Races, covering around 32 thousand miles, the chassis could not take the strain anymore and cracked in half just behind the battery carrier. I then, in 1988, bought another jeep (in pieces again) and this time paid better attention to the chassis. Following its successful restoration, I added the mechanicals from the original restoration attempt of GPW242876, (which were expertly rebuilt by others with more knowledge than I possessed at that time) and got this on the road in 1991. This now serves as my current Jeep and is presently under going restoration No.2. Details of this Jeep can be found under serial number GPW 161586. The original chassis of GPW242876 has gone to God, when it was disposed at the local tip (dump). Data plate was missing.
