A nice '45 GPW Chassis (DoD best guess), but the CB body came off a twisted MB chassis w/o a number...The hood number was painted on the dash board of the body and stamped in the firewall behind the fuel filter, so USA 20609888-S is correct for the body, not for the chassis. The Body (and twisted MB chassis) were ex. Austrian Army. I have seen several Austrian Army Jeeps with the USA Reg. Number being stamped in the body near the fuel filter. I have no idea who did it, but I believe the Austrians did it, or some establishment involved in rebuilding Jeeps after the war...although I have never seen the stamping on Jeeps other than ex Austrian Army ones, e.g. Norwegian or French used WWII Jeeps...! I would love to hear from Jeep Owners of ex. Austrian Jeeps, which have USA numbers marked near the fuel filter. I have seen tags with the number behind the filter as well as the number being stamped in the seam of firewall/dashcover just above the filter...Oh, the picture ! Well, "washed sand", I should have listened to my female passenger not to go near that area of the washed sand...in the end I needed help from an other Jeep nearby ! And I had to shovel a lot before we even could try to get "Cathy" out of that sandy bit of ground!
