GPW 84052

Hi Nick,

I have heard from the Director of the RLC Museum and he is happy to let you have a copy of the keycard without charge.  The reason I suggested this was because it contains very little information.  Anyway here’s a copy of the keycard.

So what does it tell you?  The military registration was 84YH72, it’s make is classified as Ford/Willys (? Can’t be both, can it – perhaps in your case it can), it’s war department number was 6012444 (also known as the bonnet number), the purchase contract was SM2275 and it was sold by the MOD on 23rd October 1957 (the red writing above the entry on the card).

I have also attached a page from the 1944 Vehicle Census which in most cases links war department number with the contract.  Not in the case of your vehicle as you will see - the war department number is in the range that is described as “Cars captured, etc”.  That means that it was recovered from the enemy and continued in service until 1957.

I regret that that is about all I can tell you from our records, but I hope that that is at least something.

Best wishes

Tony
